San Diego police fatally shoot knife-wielding man

April 26, 2010 |  6:14 pm

A San Diego police officer today fatally shot a 55-year-old man who threatened him with a kitchen knife and refused to stop advancing, the Police Department said.

Police had gone to the man's home in the North Park neighborhood after receiving a call from his 85-year-old mother and his sister saying he had attacked them, police said.

The man suddenly went at the officers and said they would have to shoot him, said Lt. Kevin Rooney of the department's homicide unit.

The dead man was identified as Bradford Sarten. The officer who fired the fatal shot was identified only as a 10-year veteran of the department.
