April 25, 2010 |  7:46 am

Cal State Long Beach police are looking for a man who attacked a transgender student on campus.

The attack occurred April 15 when the student went into a restroom on campus. According to authorities, a man followed the student in, called out his name and proceeded to slash the victim in the chest repeatedly.

The assailant fled. The student was taken to a hospital by a Cal State Long Beach instructor.

According to the university, the student was released from the hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.

The motive for the attack, which occurred in the school's KKJZ building, was unclear. Authorities have not said whether they are investigating it as a hate crime.

A spokesman for the university told the Long Beach Press-Telegram that officials considered it an isolated incident and they didn't see a threat to other students.
