2 UC Irvine professors receive threatening letters with white powder inside

January 4, 2010 |  5:59 pm

Two professors at UC Irvine received letters in the mail today that read “Black Death” and contained an unidentified white powder inside the envelope, university officials said.

One professor worked in the school of engineering and the other in social sciences, said university spokeswoman Cathy Lawhon. Both were in good health hours after opening their letters, she said.

The Orange County Fire Authority Hazardous Materials team is analyzing the powder and should have results back later tonight, Lawhon said.

It was not immediately clear why the two professors were targeted.
