Deputies in Covina area standoff with barricaded gunman

January 2, 2010 |  1:21 pm

A standoff is underway in an unincorporated area near Covina where an armed suspect has barricaded himself inside an apartment after allegedly shooting a woman, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The standoff began about 9 a.m. in the 20000 block of Calora Street when deputies responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon, said Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Boese.

Arriving deputies found a woman with multiple gunshot wounds, he said. The victim was taken to a local hospital. Her condition is not known.

The Sheriff’s SWAT team surrounded the apartment shortly after the man barricaded himself inside the unit, he said.

The relationship between the suspect and the victim is not known, nor is a motive for the shooting, Boese said.
