A water main break, not a private pipe, damaged road in Hollywood Hills

October 25, 2009 |  4:10 pm

About 30 homes in the Hollywood Hills were without water today after, officials determined, an 8-inch water main burst.

The break, the latest in a series over the last few months, occurred just after 11 a.m.

Los Angeles city firefighters used pumps and sandbags to protect several homes in the 7800 block of Torreyson Drive, redirecting the water to prevent the homes from flooding, spokesman Devin Gales said.

Officials have determined that the source of the water was not a private water pipe but rather a main serving the neighborhood.

Torreyson Drive was closed. The water flow and mud buildup caused minor street damage, said DWP spokeswoman Gale Harris. A crew worked this afternoon to repair the line and clear the mud and expected the water service to resume by about 8 p.m.
