October 23, 2009 |  5:22 pm
A 60-year-old man was fatally crushed in an industrial compactor this afternoon, authorities said.

The man was working at 8201 N. Woodley Ave. in Van Nuys when the accident occurred. The compactor was believed to be crushing cardboard at the time, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Devin Gales said.

The Los Angeles County coroner and the Los Angeles Police Department are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

Multiple businesses are registered at the address, and authorities said they were not yet ready to release the name of the company where the man worked. The man's name was also withheld, pending notification of family.
