Man arrested in shooting of high school student in Hollywood

October 16, 2009 |  1:03 pm

Police today arrested a 25-year-old man suspected of shooting a high school student in the hip as she was walking home from school in Hollywood.

Julio Cesar Garcia was taken into custody about 2:20 a.m. on suspicion of attempted murder, said Norma Eisenman of the Los Angeles Police Department. He was being held in jail in lieu of $550,000 bail, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The 16-year-old girl likely was caught in the crossfire of two rival gangs as she walked home from school about 1:50 p.m Tuesday near Wilton Place and Fountain Avenue, authorities said. It was unclear what school she attended, but the shooting occurred two blocks from Helen Bernstein High School.

Witnesses told authorities they saw four male juveniles running from the scene. The girl was taken to a nearby hospital, where she recovered from her wound.
