A woman believed to be in her 40s was struck and killed this morning in a hit-and-run as she crossed a South L.A. street, police said.

The car, described as a dark sedan, was traveling north on Western Avenue at 79th Street when it hit the woman at about 6:05 a.m., said Los Angeles police Officer Gregory Baek.

The driver of the sedan did not stop and drove away. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
