Boy dies after collapsing during football practice in Simi Valley

David Sumner A 10-year-old boy who collapsed Thursday night during football practice with a Simi Valley league died Friday, and a candlelight vigil will be held in his memory tonight.

David Sumner, who had played with the Simi Valley Vikings organization for about five years, was taken by ambulance to a hospital after he collapsed at Apollo Field, Vikings officials said. He underwent surgery Friday night.

Sumner was a player for the J-1 White Team. Bill Dobbs, 37, president of the Vikings’ chapter, said the cause of the boy's death is not known. “This is a child, a life was lost,” Dobbs said solemnly.

"We do not wish to speculate about the incident," a statement on the Vikings website said.

"The Viking Organization is doing everything it can do," the statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers go to the family of David Sumner. During this most tragic time the Board of Directors is taking the necessary steps to ensure the sentiments and wishes of the family are met."

The vigil is scheduled to take place at  6 p.m. at Apollo Field, 3150 School St.
