Police shoot man in Watts

September 6, 2009 | 10:58 am

Los Angeles police shot a man in Watts on Saturday night after he allegedly threatened officers with a handgun, authorities said today.

A group of officers working a crime detail near East 95th Street and Wilmington Avenue about 8:20 p.m. saw a man acting suspiciously and reaching toward his waistband, said Officer Sara Faden of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Preliminary information indicates that the man, who was standing with other people, allegedly fled and officers gave chase, Faden said.

During the chase, the man stopped, pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the officers, Faden said. The officers shot the man at least once in the torso. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive, authorities said.
