Defendant cuts his neck with razor blade during trial
A man on trial in Inglewood for attempted murder was injured this morning when he cut his own neck with a razor blade in a Los Angeles courtroom, authorities said.
Closing arguments were about to begin around 11:25 a.m. when Darnell Stewart, 31, took out the altered razor blade and struck it across neck. His wound was superficial, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.
The exact circumstances of what happened or how Stewart got the razor blade into the courtroom were unclear. No one else was injured, Whitmore said.
After order was restored, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge John Meigs immediately declared a mistrial in the case, said court spokesman Alan Parachini. Whitmore said sheriff's officials are investigating.
