Santa Ana police fatally shoot armed suspect

August 1, 2009 | 10:22 am

An armed man was shot and killed by the Santa Ana police detectives late Friday, law enforcement officials said this morning.

The shooting occurred at about 11:25 p.m. in the 300 block of Jackson Street, authorities said. Santa Ana police detectives were in the area following a vehicle when the driver suddenly pulled over and ran from the car. At least one detective chased after the man.

“The [man’s] movement and actions made the officer fear for his safety, at which point the officer fired at the [man,]” said Sgt. Brad Hadley of the Santa Ana Police Department.

The unidentified man was hit by the gunfire, but Hadley did not know how many times he was struck.  The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“A  handgun was recovered from the man at the scene,” Hadley said.
