San Diego police kill knife-wielding robbery suspect in downtown struggle

August 28, 2009 |  7:44 am

A San Diego police officer shot and killed a knife-wielding robbery suspect during a late-night scuffle Thursday, police said today.

Two bicycle-riding officers responded to a call at a Ralphs supermarket downtown and found several persons attempting to detain suspects in a robbery that had just occurred at the store, police said.

Police used their batons but were unable to immediately arrest one of the suspects, who began waving a knife at officers and others. One officer fired twice at the suspect from less than 5 feet away, according to Capt. Frank McManus of the Police Department's homicide squad.

The suspect was pronounced dead at UC San Diego Medical Center shortly after midnight. A second suspect, identified as Joseph Kidis, 18, was arrested and a third fled.

The officer is described as a three-year veteran.
