4-year-old boy shot in Long Beach

July 23, 2009 |  1:17 pm

A 4-year-old boy is in critical condition today after he was hit by a stray bullet from a gang-related shooting in Long Beach.

The boy was injured Wednesday night when a man got into an argument with a group of people that escalated into a fight and another man pulled out a gun, said Nancy Pratt, a spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department.

The intended target ran away and was not hit. But the boy was standing outside a relative's house with his mother in the 2100 block of Earl Street when he was struck. He was at the house celebrating his grandmother's birthday, Pratt said.

His mother and other family members took him to the hospital.

"This 4-year-old is a victim of senseless violence," Pratt said. She urged anyone with information to call the Police Department at (562) 570-7244.
