Squirrel knocks out power to thousands

June 13, 2009 | 10:58 am

A squirrel is to blame for cutting power off to thousands of residents in the Hollywood Hills area this morning, Department of Water and Power officials said.

The outages were reported shortly before 6 a.m., and DWP crews were able to restore power to the 2,400 residents an hour later, spokeswoman Gale Harris said.

Repair crews investigating the cause of the outages told Harris that a squirrel may have been nibbling on a wire near the intersection of Scenic Avenue and Beachwood Drive.

"Apparently that wire was part of a system that affected 2,400 homes," Harris said.
