Michelle Obama to UC Merced: Give back to the community

May 16, 2009 |  3:54 pm

First Lady Michelle Obama, in her commencement address today to the first graduating class of UC Merced, urged students to put the same energies into giving back to their communities as they in getting her to speak at their commencement ceremonies.

Obama made her debut as a commencement speaker to the first full senior class at the university, the newest and smallest school in the state’s public system. Kjrf3hnc

Obama said that particularly in this time of economic distress, communities need people to help out by starting after-school programs to help students succeed or work to reduce pollution and help the environment, according to the Associated Press.

Obama also urged graduates to remember they are blessed.
