Police captain shoots son after attack on mother, authorities say

May 23, 2009 |  7:30 pm

A police captain in northern San Diego County shot and wounded his adult son, who was attacking his own mother, authorities said.

The shooting occurred shortly after 12 a.m. Saturday at the Fallbrook home of Reginald Grigsby, a captain in the Oceanside Police Department.

Grigsby told authorities that his son, 25-year-old Reginald Grigsby Jr., who had a history of mental problems, came to the home Friday evening. The younger man began arguing with his mother and quickly turned violent, authorities said.

The father told investigators that he tried to stop the attack. When that was unsuccessful, he retrieved a handgun and shot his son, authorities said.

Mother and son suffered injuries that were not life-threatening; they were being treated at local hospitals.
