Two Marines dead in San Diego County helicopter crash

May 6, 2009 |  7:05 am

A Marine Super Cobra attack helicopter crashed Tuesday night in rural eastern San Diego County, killing two pilots aboard, the Marine Corps said today.

The helicopter, assigned to the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station-based Medium Helicopter Squadron 166, crashed north of Interstate 8 at Kitchen Creek Road in the Cleveland National Forest.

The crash is being investigated by military officials. Investigators are checking what, if any, ordnance the craft was carrying.

The helicopter was part of the Camp Pendleton-based 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit training for a six-month deployment in the western Pacific.
