Chase aftermath snarls city traffic

May 16, 2009 |  7:56 pm

City streets became jammed with traffic in west Los Angeles this evening as a police bomb squad checked out suspicious items inside a car that had been reported stolen in a robbery earlier in the day, authorities said.

The incident began when officers spotted the allegedly stolen car near North La Brea and Willoughby avenues around 5 p.m., police said. After a 10-minute pursuit, the driver of the older-model Saab crashed at La Brea and Romaine Street, where he was arrested and taken to a local hospital.

As the bomb squad investigated the contents of the car, four blocks in all directions around La Brea and Santa Monica Boulevard were closed to traffic.
