Police arrest driver in death of cyclist

April 19, 2009 | 12:40 pm

A 22-year-old driver has been arrested after he fatally struck a bicyclist and left the scene of the accident, according to police. The incident occurred early today in Echo Park.

Alejandro Hidalgo of Panorama City was driving south on Glendale Boulevard about 1:45 a.m. when he hit a 44-year-old man riding a bicycle in the same lane, LAPD Officer Christine Eastburn said.

A witness wrote down the car’s license plate number and Hidalgo was arrested at his home two hours later. He was taken to Van Nuys jail, where he was booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter.

"Based upon the physical evidence left at the scene and the statement from his passenger, it was determined that Mr. Hidalgo was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage at the time of the collision," Eastburn said.

The victim, a resident of Los Angeles, died at the scene. His identity was withheld pending notification of family members.
