March 15, 2009 |  1:12 pm

A 23-year-old pedestrian was killed today in Palmdale when he was hit by a car on a darkened road, authorities said.

The Palmdale man, whose name has not been released, was walking on 20th Street West just north of Avenue O at 4:50 a.m. when he was struck by a Mercedes driven by a 70-year-old woman, said California Highway Patrol Officer Francisco Villalobos.

"The area was dark and the area of the collision was unlit," Villalobos said.

The woman, who had a 21-year-old passenger in the car, was not issued a citation. Officers determined that she was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Villalobos said.

He said the man was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The investigation is ongoing.
