UPDATE 1 p.m.: The victim who was carried on the windshield for 500 feet was identified as the man, who was in critical condition, a police source said.
A 19-year-old USC student was killed early today as she crossed Jefferson Boulevard in a hit-and-run incident that also left a male companion critically injured, police said.
The two victims were walking in the crosswalk at Hoover Street on the edge of campus at about 3 a.m. when a man driving a dark-colored vehicle east on Jefferson Boulevard struck them, said Los Angeles police spokeswoman Rosario Herrera.
The driver continued with one of the victims on his windshield for 500 feet before stopping the car, removing the victim and fleeing, according to a Los Angeles police source. It was unclear which victim landed on the windshield.
The woman died at an area hospital; the man was being treated for his injuries, Herrera said.
