Los Alamitos mayor resigns from City Council over racial e-mail [updated]

March 2, 2009 | 11:46 am

Dean Grose_2 Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose has resigned from the City Council over a racial joke he sent by e-mail.

Grose announced his resignation from the City Council in a letter this morning to the city manager.

Last week, Grose said he would resign his position as mayor at Monday's council meeting after coming under fire for sending an e-mail depicting the White House lawn planted with watermelons and the title, "No Easter egg hunt this year." City officials had said he would be retaining his seat on the council.

Updated at 12:09 p.m. Police have stepped up patrols around Grose's home and business after he found a smashed watermelon Wednesday morning on the sidewalk and door outside his business, EMS Medical Products.
Local businesswoman and city volunteer Keyanus Price, who is black, told the Associated Press on Tuesday that she was offended by the e-mail she received from the mayor's personal account Sunday.

"I have had plenty of my share of chicken and watermelon and all those kinds of jokes," Price said.
