February 18, 2009 |  7:17 am

Interstate 5 was backed up for miles this morning after a car hit and killed a man who was running across the freeway north of downtown Los Angeles, authorities said.

The man was hit by a car in the northbound lanes about 4:30 a.m. near the Los Angeles River, said California Highway Patrol Officer David Porter. The victim, between 20 and 30 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene, he said. According to CHP news alerts, the victim ran east across the lanes and may have been going after something before he was struck by a silver Toyota.

Three lanes were closed for more than an hour. The road was cleared at 6:15 a.m.
