Probe continues in Riverside mother's alleged killing of toddler son

February 25, 2009 |  3:04 pm

Riverside police investigators are still trying to determine what motivated a 38-year-old woman to allegedly kill her 17-month-old son. The boy, Garrison Burchett, was found about 11 p.m. Monday in his home in the 5600 block of Via Terreno. He apparently had suffered a blow to his head and had a puncture wound to his stomach, said Sgt. Mark Rossi of the Riverside Police Department.

His stay-at-home mother, Lori Burchett, was arrested for allegedly killing the toddler. She was taken to the Robert Presley Detention Center in downtown Riverside. The boy’s father, Greg Burchett, 48, was at work when the killing occurred and called police when he returned home and discovered his son's body, said Det. Rick Cobb.

“Apparently, he had been dead for a bit of time, we just don’t know how long,” Cobb said. Officers have no other suspects, he said. Two other children, ages 3 and 15, were home at the time and were returned to the care of their father, an associate biology professor at Riverside City College.
