Fire emergency plan worked for one family

Some families went to Fire Station No. 1 in Montecito because they had lost their homes. Among them was Andrew Bermant, a real estate developer who owns two houses on Coyote Road, which was devastated by the blaze.

"You can lose your photos, but your memories are still in your heart," Bermant said. His family enacted their emergency plan last night, one they had practiced numerous times before.

He picked up his son from soccer last night and met his wife and other son at the Santa Barbara Biltmore.

"We're glad it didn't happen at 2 a.m. when everyone was asleep," he said.
