The work of Jaime Hernandez will be celebrated Tuesday at 7p.m. at Family Bookstore on Fairfax, with the release of ‘The Art of Jaime Hernandez: Secrets of Life and Death’ by Todd Hignite. It’s the first book looking at the works of Hernandez , one of the creators of the iconic comic ‘Love and Rockets.’

Hernandez opened up his archives for Hignite, who wrote and edited the new book, which includes sketches, childhood drawings and other previously unpublished work alongside materials from ‘Love and Rockets.’ Hignite and book designer Jordan Crane will appear to discuss the book.

While Hernandez isn’t quite a recluse, he has at times shied away from the limelight. At the 2008 Festival of Books, he said, ‘That’s why a lot of us do comics, because we want to hide behind our work.’ He won’t be hiding on Tuesday; Hernandez will join Crane and Hignite at Family to sign books for fans.
