AIA names housing design award winners for 2011

The American Institute of Architects announced the winners of its national housing awards this week. The 18 projects included custom dream houses, budget-driven production designs, cosmopolitan condos and green apartments for seniors.
The AIA jury honored Koning Eizenberg Architecture’s mixed-used Hancock building in West Hollywood, but the selection that seemed to evoke the most visceral reaction among the L.A. at Home crew was Johnsen Schmaling Architects’ OS House, pictured above, overlooking Lake Michigan in Racine, Wis. The Skittles-colored ‘apertures’ punctuating the facade are meant to echo the spirit of the neighborhood’s Victorian homes.
Another head-turner: Olson Kundig Architects’ Art Stable live-work building in Seattle, right, where a crane set on the alley side of the structure can lift oversized objects -- say, an artist’s sculpture -- through a giant door leading to each unit.
