Enormous stone surfaces may not be in your decorating budget, but a new collection of wallpapers by New York-based Lori Weitzner could help get the room rocking without crushing your wallet. Her new Nature collection includes Quarry, above, and Stratum, two coverings that are made out of super-thin layers of real rock particles.

The 2-foot-by-4-foot flexible sheets have the rough texture of stone, as well as mineral patterning that makes for a random, organic look. The stone is backed with paper and can be cut to fit.

Quarry and Stratum are the latest from Weitzner, who has been rolling out the experimental ideas lately. Last year she came out with Magnetism, a wallpaper that’s coated in magnetic minerals so that it doubles as a linen wallcovering and a magnetized surface. Her Newsworthy paper is a cool twist on grasscloth -- and a wink to certain dinosaurs who still publish on newsprint.

So what are the downsides to these innovative papers? The installation of the stone wallpaper requires an extra step: Because they can be stained from oils on the skin, the manufacturer recommends sealing the product after it’s installed. The designs are also sold only to the trade, meaning you’ll need a decorator to price it and place the order.
