The American Institute of Architects officially announces winners of its national housing awards on Tuesday, but L.A. at Home has a sneak peek at the winners list.

Step Up on 5th, a Santa Monica apartment building for the homeless and mentally ill, was a winner in the specialized housing category.

Designed by the Santa Monica firm Pugh + Scarpa Architects, Step Up on 5th was featured in an April 2009 Home section cover package on thoughtful housing for the formerly homeless. The AIA jury praised the design’s “elegance for the underprivileged.” (That’s the facade pictured at top and above right.)

Formosa 1140, right, an 11-unit condo complex and pocket park in West Hollywood, was one of the winners in the multifamily housing category. Its designer, Culver City-based Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects, won praised for the “airy and uplifting” design, use of color and smart planning on a small urban site.

The AIA received about 200 entries in four housing categories this year. From that pool, 18 winners were honored. We’ve got photos and jury comments for them all in our extended photo gallery.
