Los Angeles rarely lands on any ‘best’ quality of life lists, so it was nice to see This Old House magazine name West Adams as one of the country’s best neighborhoods for old houses.

With the help of PreservationDirectory.com, the editors contacted thousands of neighborhood groups, real estate agents, residents and preservationists for nominations. They looked for ‘oft-overlooked neighborhoods populated by people who share an appreciation of finely crafted homes that have plenty of past and lots of future.’ Also included among the top 51 best neighborhoods: Harwinton, Conn.; Brunswick, Ga.; the Manoa area of Honolulu; and Fort Wayne, Ind.

Once one of Los Angeles’ wealthiest neighborhoods, West Adams is ‘a shared secret among those of more modest means, who love its authentic feel in a city often chided for its artificiality,’ magazine editors said. The magazine also suggested that now is a good time to buy in West Adams, because fixer-upper bungalows are $100,000 less than they were a few years ago.

West Adams rated among the best for city life, movie buffs and singles. For a full list, click here.
