Tomatomania: Total devotion for maniacs and others

Can it be? Already? We haven’t even moved the clocks ahead for spring yet. But yes, it is time. For the tomato-centric, the Oscars have nothing on Tomatomania’s plant sales, where the faithful talk tomatoes with like-minded gardeners and trade tales about taste and tricks of the growing trade.

Starting in March in San Diego, sales are scheduled in California and on the East Coast, with the dates and locations on the Tomatomania website. The organizers say they’ll have almost 300 varieties at the Encino sale March 26-28, one of the largest. The Fillmore sale takes place April 9-10.

Get a plant or two to put in containers on the deck, or go all out, the way Bill Anderson, man of thousands of tomatoes, has.
