Feb. 17: Michael Sorkin, professor of architecture and director of the graduate program in urban design at City College of New York, gives a lecture titled “Pro Eutopia.” 7 p.m. Free. Southern California Institute of Architecture, 960 3rd Ave., Los Angeles.

Feb. 18: Thursday Garden Talks With Lili Singer continues with Jan Smithen, author of “Sun Drenched Gardens: The Mediterranean Style,” who will present a slide show and lecture on unusual Australian plants, from Adenanthos to Westringia. Feb. 20: The Huntington ushers in the Year of the Tiger at its annual Chinese New Year Festival with a full day of programs in the Chinese garden: lion dancers and drummers, martial arts demonstrations, shadow puppet theater, mask-changing performances, readings and signings by children’s book authors. A special display of penjing (miniature trees in pots) will be on view. Visitors can also shop for fresh flowers — a traditional part of lunar new year celebrations. 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Included in regular admission of $6 to $20. Feb. 20: Pop culture humorist and author Charles Phoenix presents “Retro Slide Show of Southern California,” which celebrates suburbia, fast-food stands and L.A. landmarks. Feb. 20: The Shipley Nature Center will host Family Celebration to Save the Monarchs from 10 a.m. to noon. Hands-on activities will highlight how to create a home for monarchs in your backyard, including suggestions of native plants that attract the butterflies.
