I love everything about Krank Press’ ingenious perpetual gardening calendar.

Letterpress artist Elinor Nissley has broken each month’s page into three sections. One advises which edible plants it’s time to plant -- and whether it is best to start them as seed or as seedlings. The second lists in-season fruits and vegetables to look for at the farmers market (or in your own backyard). The third can function as a birthday calendar, or, as the artist suggests on her Etsy page, as a record of what one planted and harvested.

Nissley has thoughtfully customized the $20 calendar for three planting zones, so if you love the Southland version, you can get one for a friend in San Francisco, and another for a pal in the Pacific Northwest. I’m planning to keep several on hand as last-minute gifts.

Even non-gardeners will love the linoleum block printed seasonal produce on each page -- and the fact that it is a perpetual calendar, means it’s the perfect gift for any time of year. And it will be as relevant in 2015 as it is today -- so long as global warming doesn’t mean Oregonians will be planting oranges soon.

You can order the calendars now from the Krank Press Etsy store. Nissley is printing more shortly and expects to ship the next batch in mid-January.
