President Obama is nominating Peter S. Silva, a Southern California water expert, to fill a key water quality post.

Silva, a civil engineer with more than three decades of experience in the water and wastewater fields, has been chosen to be the next assistant administrator for water programs in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The position oversees implementation of the clean water and safe drinking water acts.

Silva, who lives outside of San Diego, is currently a senior policy advisor for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. He previously served as vice chair of the state Water Resources Control board for six years.
