Rihanna: Chris Brown collaborations were ‘innocent,’ for the fans

Rihanna is explaining her recent collaborations with Chris Brown, the onetime boyfriend who was convicted of beating her up the night before the 2009 Grammy Awards.

‘The hottest R&B artist out right now is Chris Brown,’ she said Thursday on Ryan Seacrest’s morning radio show, referring to her tune ‘Birthday Cake.’ ‘So I wanted him on the track.’

Then they cut a deal for the benefit of their fans, she said.

Fans of each of the artists have often been at odds since the assault, which resulted in Brown pleading guilty to a felony charge and being sentenced to many hours of community service, anger management and domestic violence courses and five years’ probation.

Breezy and Rihanna, however, mixed things up around the beginning of the year with a Twitter flirtation that got a bit weird. Months later, they were collaborating.

‘He was like, ‘Why don’t you do the remix to my track?’ and it was a trade-off,’ Rihanna said. ‘We did two records. One for my fans. One for his fans, and that way our fans can come together.

‘There shouldn’t be a divide. You know? It’s music, and it’s innocent.’
