If you asked us to guess why Michelle Williams retains a super-cropped haircut, we’d assume a penchant for whimsy, or simply ease in chasing after her 6-year-old.

But the actress reveals the haircut signifies something deeper: It’s a memorial, of sorts, to a person she lost who preferred the length.

Daughter Matilda would prefer her mother’s hair longer, the ‘My Week With Marilyn’ star told British Elle, but the style isn’t going anywhere, as she ‘cut it for the one straight man who has ever liked short hair and I wear it in memorial of somebody who really loved it.’

That tribute could very well be for one-time love Heath Ledger, who passed away in January 2008 after an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

We’ll be seeing lots of Williams and her hair in the coming months, as she’s a shoo-in for awards attention thanks to her portrayal of screen legend Marilyn Monroe. Having embodied the sex symbol, mass appeal isn’t lost on Williams.

‘Of course, the only people who like it are gay men and my girlfriends,’ she says of the ‘do.

‘Straight men across the board are not into this hair!’

We think somehow, some way, Williams will find a way to speak to the straight guys.
