Lindsay Lohan, who just got a break on a positive alcohol test after it was determined she was under no order to stay booze-free as her probation continues, is reportedly blaming the failed test on her fondness for Kombucha tea, a fermented soft drink that contains a smidgen of alcohol.

The actress, currently under house arrest, is said to be telling friends that the beverage was to blame for her busted test, declaring to TMZ that she is ‘responsible, and ... following the rules and obeying my judge and the Los Angeles judicial system.’

She added that she’d like to do what she must to revive her movie career and earn back the respect of, you know, pretty much everybody.

Kombucha tea may be familiar as the alleged culprit when a report surfaced in March that Lohan’s probation report included a positive test for alcohol consumption. She was later determined to have violated probation not for drinking but for a misdemeanor theft -- she pleaded no contest in -- that ultimately resulted in her house arrest. Judge Stephanie Sautner noted on Thursday that Lohan’s court order to stay away from alcohol and drugs had expired Feb. 25.

So, what exactly is Kombucha tea, which must contain less than 0.5% alcohol to stay on the soft-drink market? Those who prefer the homemade variety start with a Kombucha colony of bacteria and yeast -- imagine a slippery-looking thing the size and shape of a tortilla or pita -- then add sugar and black or green tea and allow the concoction to ferment. Yummy!

According to the Mayo Clinic, which notes that no solid studies have proven health claims linked to the tea, the drink has been credited with stimulating the immune system, preventing cancer and improving digestion and liver function.

Plus, if Lindsay’s playing it straight, the tea is also beneficial in heading off a trip to jail.
