Ryan O'Neal says Farrah Fawcett's cancer may have been his family's fault

June 21, 2011 | 11:31 am

Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal Nobody knows what causes cancer, but Ryan O'Neal says the cancer that killed Farrah Fawcett may have originated with him and his family, especially the bad vibes around his daughter, Tatum O'Neal.

"There was turmoil during my love affair with Farrah, a lot of it caused by my family, by my kids. All of them, but particularly Tatum," an emotional O'Neal said Monday on "Piers Morgan Tonight."

"And I just think that if she had never met us, would she still be alive today? Because nobody knows what causes cancer."

Fawcett died June 25, 2009, after a long battle with anal cancer, just hours before Michael Jackson's shocking death captured the spotlight. The reality series "Ryan & Tatum: The O'Neals" premiered Sunday night on OWN.

"Do you really believe that?" Morgan asked.

"I think it's highly possible ... ," O'Neal said. "Maybe it isn't true, but it's possible." Um, sorry Tatum.

While his sons adored Fawcett, especially when they would hide and try to spy on her naked in the sauna, Tatum did not, according to Ryan, who repeatedly mixed up Farrah and Tatum's names during the interview. Fawcett and O'Neal had one son together, Redmond O'Neal, who like his dad has had a number of run-ins with the law.

Did we mention Ryan and Tatum's new reality series launched Sunday on Oprah Winfrey's new network? Yeah, guess we did.

"She didn't smoke, she didn't drink, she exercised every day and she believed in good health," O'Neal told Morgan. "And then we came along, the four of us. And gradually she got -- she got weaker."

Hmm. We will refrain from commentary. Feel free, however, to add your own.
