Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson are engaged

Singer and TV personality Jessica Simpson is engaged to Eric Johnson, the Yale-educated former NFL tight end she’s been dating since May.

Joe Simpson, Jessica’s dad, tweeted his congrats Sunday, saying, ‘So very happy for Jess and Eric. May they have a lifetime of joy and happiness.’

‘The Price of Beauty’ host, 31, flashed her ruby-and-diamond engagement ring Saturday -- thankfully not the ring pictured in the September shot at right, from a Macy’s visit -- at a Dillard’s department store appearance in Kansas City, People magazine reported. Keeping with the retail theme, she told People that she’ll be singing on a float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, with her 30-year-old fiance and his family joining her.

Drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 2001, Johnson played for that team and later the New Orleans Saints before becoming a free agent in 2008. He became a free agent in his personal life more recently, separating from his wife of five years in October 2009, filing for divorce in February and finalizing it this September.

Simpson hasn’t had the greatest luck with exes since her 2006 divorce from Nick Lachey, whose engagement to Vanessa Minnillo is still fresh on the tides of gossip. Earlier this year, she was famously called ‘sexual napalm’ by singer John Mayer in an interview with Playboy magazine.

Simpson, who was famously dumped on her birthday in 2009 by Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, spent this past July 10 with Johnson in Italy. Before meeting her new beau, however, Simpson told David Letterman in March that she still enjoyed looking at ex Romo’s ‘cute butt in the outfit –- uniform. ‘
