Retired NFL linebacker Junior Seau survived a crash off a cliff in Carlsbad on Monday morning just hours after being arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence with injury, KGTV 10News reports.

Seau, who police said sustained cuts and bruises in the accident, was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. The alleged domestic violence involved his live-in girlfriend, 10News said.

[Updated, 12:50 p.m.: Oceanside police have released information about Seau’s arrest, L.A. Now reports. His 25-year-old girlfriend alleged he assaulted her during a verbal argument at their home, police said; though not on site when police arrived Sunday night, Seau spoke to officers on the phone and returned home, where he was arrested without incident.]

The 12-time Pro Bowl pick was arrested around midnight, was booked, and was released from detention around 3:20 a.m., TMZ said; a 911 call about the crash came in at 8:42 a.m.

Seau, a San Diego native who played the better part of his NFL career in his hometown before stints with Miami and New England, was an All-American at USC in 1989, going pro after his junior year. No. 55 played what he said was ‘probably my last game’ in January 2010.
