Actress and breast cancer survivor Maura Tierney and ‘Today’ show host Meredith Vieira stepped up Friday for Boston’s Jimmy Fund, throwing out the first pitch together before the home team Red Sox played the Toronto Blue Jays.

Tierney had surgery in July 2009 to remove a tumor from her breast, giving up her lead role in the sitcom ‘Parenthood’ to take care of her health. She will be back in September with a new series, the legal drama ‘The Whole Truth’ -- and recently inspired former ‘ER’ costar Scott Grimes to donate proceeds from his new music video to breast cancer research.

Vieira’s life has been touched by cancer as well -- her husband, Richard Cohen, has been through two bouts of colon cancer, and also has multiple sclerosis.

The ceremonial pitch was part of an annual fundraising effort for the Jimmy Fund, which ...
