After being dragged by their boyfriends and husbands to see ‘The Hangover’ for two weekends in a row, the girls finally got revenge. Big time.

‘The Proposal,’ a romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, opened in first place at the box office, taking in $34.1 million. That blew away most of the industry projections last week that said the movie would end up finishing in the mid- to high-$20-million range. Well, so much for predictions.

For Bullock, ‘The Proposal’ is easily her biggest opening weekend ever, almost doubling ‘The Premonition,’ which bowed with $17.6 million in ticket sales. Ryan Reynolds probably didn’t hurt his future paychecks either as he is clearly moving into leading-man territory and making us forget all about ‘Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place.’

Coming in second and showing lots of staying power in the third weekend of its binge was Warner Bros.’ ‘The Hangover.’ The bachelor party gone awry took in $26.5 million, according to a rival studio’s estimate, and passed the $150-million mark in total box office.

Disney/Pixar’s ‘Up’ shows few signs of crashing back down to earth anytime soon. In its fourth weekend, it still pulled in $21.3 million, only a 31% dip from last week, bringing its total box-office take to $224.1 million.

The other major release, Sony’s caveman comedy ‘Year One,’ with Jack Black and Michael Cera, opened in fourth place with $20.2 million. That’s a respectable showing for the movie, which cost about $60 million.
