The wild card in the Dodgers’ sweepstakes was played Wednesday, when Time Warner Cable confirmed its interest in pursuing a bid for the team.

Of all the parties that might like to buy the team -- a distinguished group that includes Magic Johnson, Peter O’Malley, Mark Cuban, Joe Torre and Dennis Gilbert -- the party with the most urgent need to buy the team might be Time Warner Cable.

Time Warner Cable and the Lakers are set to launch two cable channels later this year, one in English and one in Spanish. The Angels have reached a new, long-term deal with Fox Sports, leaving the Dodgers as the one baseball team in town available for live summer programming on the TWC channels.

‘The Los Angeles Dodgers are at the top of that wish list,’ TWC Sports President David Rone told Sports Business Daily in November.

With a court preventing the Dodgers from selling their television rights -- at least for now -- Time Warner Cable could seek to buy the team outright.

After all, spending some $4 billion for the rights to air Dodgers games might not be as efficient as spending less than half that to buy the team. TWC also could join a prospective ownership group.

Time Warner Cable is exploring those options, spokeswoman Maureen Huff said Wednesday.

“We remain interested,” she said.

Huff declined further comment.
