The Dodgers came back from their latest visit to the scrap heap with outfielder Brian Giles, whom they signed to a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to spring training.

A former two-time All-Star, the 39-year-old Giles was one of the players the Dodgers were considering to sign to be their fourth outfielder. (Reed Johnson was awarded the job and major-league deal.)

Giles was limited to 61 games with the San Diego Padres last year because of knee problems and hit .191 with two home runs and 23 runs batted in. Giles is a career .291 hitter over 15 major-league seasons.
