L.A. Times' Battle of the Burgers: Vote, or the Godfather will break your legs

I know this much about the nearly 90 people who submitted burger recipes to the L.A. Times Battle of the Burger. They are a bunch of procrastinators. (A flood of submissions came in at the 11th hour Sunday, literally the last day for submissions) before voting begins today

And I also know this about them: They think outside the bun. 

Sure, plenty of beef burgers were submitted, such as this beauty -- called "The Godfather" -- submitted by Steve Berry of Ladera Ranch.

But we also have burgers made of rabbit, chicken thighs, shrimp, short ribs, barbecue pork, Cuban pork, bison, steak tartare, crab cakes, chickpeas, pork and shrimp, Italian sausages, chorizo, lamb, turkey  and salmon, as well as several vegan and vegetarian burgers.

Consider this your invitation to pore over admissions and vote. You can vote up to 10 times a day per Facebook account, but you can only cast one vote per recipe per day. (As a result, you are strongly encouraged to get your friends, relatives and significant others, as well as your favorite supermarket check-out person to jam the ballot boxes and vote for you as well.) Voting ends at midnight June 13.

We'll pick the 10 top vote getters, and then the L.A. Times test kitchen will do its thing, putting the recipes to the test. We'll invite the winners to come to the test kitchen for photographs, and we'll publish our favorite burgers in print on June 30. That's just in time for you to plan your July 4th cookout.

I'm going to suggest that we create a special "character" category for Berry for his Godfather submission and just go ahead and declare him the winner now. The burger sure looks good, but it's his submission that wins us over:

"Many people have come to me for favors. Many people say to me, 'Godfather, how can I make a spicy Italian burger that’s so delicious it makes-a my mama weep.' I used to say to them, 'I would tell you, but then I’d hafta kill you.' Now that I’m older and retired from the family business, I don’t care so much who makes-a my burger. As long as they do it right. So here’s the deal:
