More crabs and fried chicken at Hungry Cat; Mitsuwa food fair; cooking class at Border Grill

Crab & fried chicken: The Hungry Cat has more blue crabs and fried chicken. On Tuesday, the restaurant will serve blue crabs by the half-dozen or dozen (with lots of newspaper and mallets -- though whether you need one depends on your technique; see video above); fried chicken; and beer, cocktails and wine. Japanese supermarket food fair: The Mitsuwa Marketplace stores in Torrance and Costa Mesa host a Japanese Gourmet Food Fair from Thursday to Saturday, featuring specialty products from various regions in Japan, including ramen from Fukuoka, Osaka’s takoyaki (griddled octopus dumplings), Hokkaido seafood bento boxes and, um, apple pie. 21515 S. Border Grill cooking class: Chefs Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger host a demo-style cooking class on June 5 that comes with lunch, cocktails and a recipe booklet. On the menu: cucumber melon margarita; Baja ceviche tostada with lime-marinated halibut and shrimp; zucchini blossom quesadilla with manchego, panela and cotija cheeses and handmade flour tortilla; Yucatan pork tacos with braised achiote pork, black beans, handmade corn tortilla, pickled onion and orange jicama slaw; watercress, jicama and avocado salad with coriander vinaigrette; and capirotada, Mexican bread pudding with apples, walnuts, cinnamon, whipped crema, fresh berries. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. $75 per person.
