Congratulations to Rick Massa, 58, a retired Los Angeles Police Department/SWAT officer from Simi Valley. He won the comfort food competition during the Season 2 premiere of the Food Network’s ‘Ultimate Recipe Showdown.’ The category? Comfort foods. His prize? $25,000. A version of his signature dish, Cheese Lovers 5 Cheese Mac & Cheese, will also appear on the menus at participating T.G.I. Fridays, the show’s sponsor, as Gourmet Mac n’ Five Cheese.

Did you watch the show? What did you think? I thought Emily Hobbs of Ozark, Mo., was going to take it away with that crazy-yet-delicious-sounding pumpernickel-and-pastrami sandwich that had the judges doing backflips. (I also thought she was going to break down when she lost.)

But in the end, you just can’t beat mac and cheese for comfort food.

SoCal was definitely representing on this episode: Massa and Hobbs were competing against Diana Davis of Sherman Oaks and Michaela Rosenthal of Woodland Hills.
