Golf architect Gil Hanse chosen for 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games

Gil Hanse, one of the top golf architects in the country, has just landed a highly prized job in his field. Hanse has been chosen to design the course for the 2016 summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The 2016 Games will mark the first time that golf has been an official sport since the 1904 Games in St. Louis. Hanse will partner with pro-golfer Amy Alcott to design a course that will be located in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood, the part of Rio that will host many of the Olympic venues.
Hanse’s team beat out seven other contenders for the job, including the design team of golfing legend Jack Nicklaus and Annika Sorenstam. Hanse told reporters this week that construction on the course is expected to begin in October and be completed in 2014.
Based in Pennsylvania, Hanse Golf Design has worked on projects around the world. The firm recently worked on a renovation of the Los Angeles Country Club’s north course.
Hanse’s firm is also working with Donald Trump to renovate Blue Monster, the famous course in the Doral Golf Resort in Florida. After the Rio Games, the Olympic golf course designed by Hanse is expected to be used as a public facility.
