‘American Idol’ alum Constantine Maroulis lands next Broadway job

‘American Idol’ alumnus Constantine Maroulis proved that he had bona fide acting and singing talent when he made his Broadway debut in 2009 in the musical ‘Rock of Ages.’ Now Maroulis has lined up his next Broadway role in a revival of the musical ‘Jekyll & Hyde,’ which will first tour the country starting in the Los Angeles area.

Maroulis will play the double role of Dr. Jekyll and his evil alter-ego Mr. Hyde in the Frank Wildhorn musical. The Broadway-bound production is scheduled to begin in September in an unlikely place -- the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, for what is being called a preview engagement.

If producers were looking for an off-the-radar venue to work out any kinks in the show, they found it. Even by L.A. theater standards, La Mirada is considered a bit out of the way for Angelenos, though geographically it isn’t far from the city proper (20 miles from downtown). The preview engagement is set to run from Sept. 7-30.

‘Jekyll,’ directed by Jeff Calhoun, will kick off its tour in San Diego on Oct. 2 at the Civic Theatre. Other cities in the planned 25-week run will be announced later. The revival is scheduled to reach Broadway in the spring of 2013. The musical first played on Broadway in 1997 following a 30-city tour. Adapted from the novella by Robert Louis Stevenson, the show features a book and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse and music by Wildhorn.

Maroulis most recently appeared in L.A. in the national tour of ‘Rock of Ages,’ following his Broadway run with the show. He will have a cameo role in the movie version of the musical.
